The education of landscape professionals is one of the LI’s key functions under its Royal Charter, with the aim of supporting the profession in achieving the highest standards. The Institute’s educational work includes promotion of landscape architecture as a career, accreditation of higher education courses, professional examinations and monitoring and support for continuing professional development.
In May 2008 the Institute launched I want to be a landscape architect, a new campaign to promote the profession to young people and career changers.
The LI accredits 15 programmes across the country, working in partnership with the universities to ensure that courses meet the needs of the profession and remain fresh, challenging and relevant. Completion of an LI accredited course leads to Licentiate membership of the LI.
The LI’s Pathway to Chartership is the means by which landscape professionals achieve fully qualified status and is a mentored period of professional development culminating in an oral examination. Candidates on the Pathway can work at their own pace and are supported in planning and reviewing their learning, and developing their skills as a reflective practitioner.
Under the LI’s Code of Conduct, all members have an obligation to maintain their professional competence and support the education and development of others. Members' CPD is monitored annually, and the LI offers a range of services to support members in their development, including conferences, seminars and guidance materials.
